Schools in Wrexham embrace Appetite for Life scheme

As debate continues to surround nutrition in the educational system, Wrexham County Borough Council has implemented seven healthy eating projects in primary and secondary schools across the county.
The projects plan to encourage children to choose to eat healthy food at school and participate in the Change4Life Campaign.
Collaboration between the Healthy Schools Team, Community Dieticians and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, has seen all lunchtime supervisors within Wrexham primary schools offered training on the key principles of the Appetite for Life programme.
All kitchens in the schools involved in the Appetite for Life scheme have been given a mini makeover to help encourage children to take part in the project. At one school in the region, a discussion group involving pupils, parents and teachers saw the school dining hall transformed and updated in order to cater for the eating requirements of children.
One of the initiatives involves treating primary school children to a full dining experience, with tables being formally laid out and table-service provided.
Another idea involves pre-ordered ‘designer sandwiches’ which has been introduced in all secondary schools across the County and has so far proved to be a great success.
Food Ambassador Tool Kits have been introduced by the Community Dieticians at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, aimed at 14 to 15 year olds at five secondary schools in Wrexham.
Change4Life is hoping that by introducing and encouraging healthy eating in schools, children will continue the trends at home.
