Construction underway for school’s new catering training facility in Leicester

Harborough School in Leicester, has this week seen work begin on building its new £1m state-of-the-art training kitchen and canteen.

In addition to a large dining area for pupils, the new buildings will include a modern, fully equipped kitchen that will be used to provide healthy school meals for pupils and will double up as a learning centre for those students wishing to study for a catering diploma.

When finished, the venue will offer Harborough School’s pupils the chance to further enhance their culinary skills and will also be available for use by other schools in the region who do not currently have access to such facilities.

To help cover the cost of the project, the kitchen will be available for hire by the community and private individuals and companies during the school holidays.

Peter Osborne, chairman of Leicestershire County Council, visited the school yesterday and was joined by pupils to cut the first turf in order to mark the start of the construction project.

Mr Osborne said “These new facilities are going to be an excellent resource for both the school and the local community. Not only this, but other local schools will be able to benefit from the training kitchen to further their skills with the diploma. I know that staff and pupils are eager to see the building completed and I am also looking forward to seeing it all come to fruition.”

The new development is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
