A cold room (sometimes stylised as ‘coldroom’) is a fantastic storage solution that could transform how you keep perishable items such as milk, meat and vegetables.

Once the reserve of the biggest and most prosperous establishments, cold rooms are now extremely cost-effective, especially for those restaurants and facilities that typically takes in large deliveries and keep a lot of produce in reserve.

Typically speaking, cold rooms operate anywhere between 0-5°C, and freezer rooms at a lower range of around -20°C*. Effectively a walk-in fridge or freezer, these items are available in a number of sizes and thanks to their modular design and construction, they can be installed and be in use within a few days of delivery.

Do I need a cold room?

This all depends on the types of food that you serve, their shelf life and how regular your food ordering and turnover is. If you have fresh produce delivered very regularly, such as on a daily basis, there may be less need for this type of storage. If you receive weekly food orders, or even less regular deliveries, this type of storage is an ideal solution.

A cold room is able to hold larger quantities of ingredients, as well as helping you organise ingredients and foods better, helping your team be more efficient in their roles.

How much space do I need?

In the past a cold room was generally only suitable for businesses with lots of space in order to fit one in, however with advances in refrigeration and technology, it's now possible to fit a cold room into various shapes and sizes of room, big or small.

The size can vary from something similar in size to a large fridge or a small cupboard, up to something as big as a room. The interior should be fitted with suitable shelves, to allow organisation and segregation of different types of foods as required.

Ideally you need to ensure that you have enough space to store your ingredients, avoiding packing them in too tightly, as this can restrict the airflow and cooling, which can result in different items having uneven or inaccurate temperatures.

Cold Room Installation

Installation of this specialist equipment is done by a trained engineer. The units are modular, meaning they come in separate sections and must be carefully installed. We will typically send out an engineer for an initial site survey, followed by installation and commissioning of the unit.
