A recent survey of Britain’s favourite meals by a major supermarket chain revealed that although as far as Brits are concerned you can’t beat a Sunday roast, we’re actually a rather cosmopolitan lot, with foreign food making up the rest of the top five.
The inclusion of the Sunday roast in the number one spot is hardly a surprise as it is a well-known favourite and furthermore it fits the growing fashion favouring the return of sit-down, home-cooked family meals.
Other traditional British favourites were fish and chips, shepherd’s pie and sausage and mash, but none of these even came close to the Sunday roast’s massive seventy percent vote.
What may be more surprising is that the Sunday roast was in fact the only traditionally British dish in our top five favourite meals.
Curry, spaghetti bolognaise and Chinese stir fry have been popular for a long time now and have often been on the top spots, but Mexican fajitas are a more modern entry to the top five.
The predominance of foreign foods has been attributed in part to the influence of celebrity chefs, lending us a new found audacity in the kitchen.
Out of the top ten international dishes, Asian foods make up 90% of the favourites list, with Thai curries making a strong showing and sushi creeping up the list, displaying how our tastes have become increasingly exotic.
While those were the most popular dishes to eat at home, apparently fish and chips remains our favourite takeaway meal, closely followed by Chinese, while Italian food is our preferred choice for dining out.
