Crisp service at new Belfast cafe

CrispsThe craze for unearthing new gastronomic trends and bringing them to the commercial market isn’t exactly new, but at the moment we’ve noticed that there’s a desire to be uniquely singular; to foster and idea based around one product and then unleash it on the world.

Recently we’ve seen a cereal cafe and an egg restaurant open up in London, but we think those concepts are so 2014 – so last year.

This is 2015, the year where the potato chips rule the roost.

Earlier today a new cafe opened its doors in Belfast.

Entitled ‘Simply Crispy’, the venue will only serve up the best in classic and contemporary crisp sandwiches.

The menu contains (what has been described as) intriguing combinations that include old-fashioned flavours such as cheese and onion, salt and vinegar and prawn cocktail alongside more contemporary options such as Frazzles and everybody’s favourite, pickled onion Monster Munch. The crisps are served in a bread bun – cheese and ham is optional – and is available with an accompanying side of soup and chips.

For those who are more traditionally minded, this may seem as a ruse and that whoever organised this forgot that today isn’t April Fools’ Day. And those people would, partly, be correct.

The idea was first proposed by the satirical website The Ulster Fry who wrote a tongue-in-cheek article about a fictional crisp cafe. The piece proved to be so popular restaurateurs got in touch about making this amusing jab at premiumised food trends come to life.

“When I read the article I immediately thought, we could make that joke into a reality, and got in touch….so from [today] we’re rebranding,” explained Andrew McMenamin, the owner of an existing cafe.

We’re just surprised that it was Northern Ireland’s capital and not England’s that got there first.

Modern food, eh?
