Beer Day Britain 2016

If you didn’t already know, today is National Beer Day! Or June 15th to the rest of us!

Three cheers to the beers! Ale hail to the ale!

We love a good beer, and we are sure you do too! But here are a few of our favourite craft beers to celebrate Beer Day Britain 2016…

Craft beer is in some ways nothing new, home-brew ale and beer has been done by people up and down the country almost since time began!

But the change to the mass-market lager beers and ales changed the way that we British consumed our national drink.

A taste change has occurred in the past few years, that has seen ‘micro breweries’ crop up in hundreds of locations up and down the country. The most notable being the rise of Scottish micro-brewery, Brewdog.

Micro-breweries tend to be independently owned and are characterised by focussing on flavour and quality over quantity. Organisations such as the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have seen a surge in membership and support, with this movement still gaining traction.

It still comes as a shock that micro-breweries only have a 2% market share. Hopefully that will increase in the coming years!

But we digress! Here are 3 of our favourite craft beers that you can buy today:

Slumbering Monk, Joule’s Brewery, Market Drayton, Shropshire

Joule’s premium ale is a full bodied, malty beer which is incredibly smooth but at 4.5% is still a strong ale.

The name is homage to the monks who originally brewed the beer at the nearby abbey and marked every barrel with a ‘cross’ to show that it indeed brewed at the abbey.

A very satisfying beer that has a lovely malty and nutty taste. Well worth a try.

Leeds Pale, Leeds Brewery, Leeds, Yorkshire

The Leeds Brewery was only established in 2007, and has been making some of the best ales that Yorkshire has to offer.

We are huge fans of Leeds Pale ale, which light bitter taste has hints of citrus which makes for a bittersweet pint.

A nice light and refreshing session ale that is brewed all year using Slovenian Bobek hops.

Not for all, but we think it is a perfect summer ale, it’s just a shame it’s not quite found further afield just yet…

Brooklyn Lager, Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, USA

We have debated the inclusion of this, as we are celebrating all things British up until this point, but one of our team discussed the merits of this American craft lager.

Gaining major popularity on both sides of the pond, one sip and you will see why. This is a refreshing amber/copper coloured lager that is unlike many of the major brews from the likes of Carling, Heineken et al.

Very well-balanced, Brooklyn Lager has a strong aftertaste that is an easy-drinking lager that almost resembles an ale.

At 7pm on the 15th June CAMRA and Beer Day Britain are planning a nationwide communal ‘cheers’ to beer, so make sure you are prepared
