Finnair flies with cooking oil

Cooking oilOver the years we have heard of numerous innovative people and enterprises that plan to use waste cooking oil as a form of biofuel to power a variety of things. The idea certainly isn’t new but it is always a topic that gets a nod of approval from those stationed here at CS Catering headquarters

And one such endeavour by Finnair, Finland’s largest airline, has been making the news recently.

The Scandinavian carrier used a mix of recycled cooking oil alongside more traditional jet fuel to create a hybrid biofuel and then used that to fly from Helsinki to New York.

The demonstration flight took nine-hours, crossing the Atlantic, before landing safe and sound.

Finnair noted that if this compound was widely adopted on its fleet they would be able to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions from anywhere between 50 and 80 percent.

However, this jet propelling fuel is currently twice the price than conventionally formulated alternatives and is therefore too expensive for airlines to use on a regular, let alone primary, basis.

This is not a new initiative by any means. The company first flew with a form of biofuel in 2011 whilst some of their competitors have been selectively using the compound for a number of years now.

In conjunction with this trans-Atlantic flight, the Finnish airline has announced that they are hoping to establish a dedicated biofuel hub with a couple of partners in order to develop a supply chain which would lower the cost of this green and sustainable fuel.

So one day maybe all your waste cooking oil will be used to power you on your holidays!
