Bakers Create a Record Breaking Baguette in Milan

Baguette

Excuse us for a minute or two – or perhaps even an hour or more – but we’re salivating over the record breaking news that has come out of Milan over the weekend.

In case you haven’t heard, French and Italian bakers combined their efforts to produce the world’s longest baguette.

It came in at 122 metres in length, or 400ft for those using imperial measurements.

A judge from the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand and (we guess) after a flick of an exceedingly long tape measure the sixty-odd bakers received the thumbs up.

The elongated baguette apparently took seven hours to prepare and bake, and a specially designed portable oven had to be shipped in to cook the thing. To make matters worse, due to its length, the intrepid bakers had to work outside in less than perfect conditions.

“It’s very difficult to do a big baguette, because we are outside,” said Dominique Anract, owner of a bakery in Paris and one of those who took part in the record attempt.

“It was cold and we [were] outside, so for the dough it’s not easy.”

You’re telling us!

The entire feat was backed by Ferrero, the Italian confectioner who own the Ferrero Rocher and Nutella brands.

In an act of mouth-watering genius, the baguette was cut in half and smothered in Nutella before being served to visitors at the Milan World Expo 2015 World’s Fair.

The previous 111-metre record was held by a French supermarket.

The 122-metre baguette hasn’t been the sole record breaking item of food on show during the six-month expo. At least four world records are believed to have been set in Milan, including one for the longest pizza which was nearly a mile long!
