Consumers are for the most part a savvy bunch, with a growing health-conscious movement that constantly seek out the latest ‘superfoods’ and major health boosting beverages.

With growing awareness of the negative impact that sugar has on health, an ever increasing number of consumers are looking for healthier sweetener options.

This has seen a rise in natural sugar substitutes such as honey, agave nectar and even stevia. But we think it’s now time for coconut sugar to come to the fore…

Coconut sugar is also called coconut palm sugar, and is yet another natural unrefined sugar made from the sap of the coconut tree flower blossoms and is often promoted as being more nutritious and lower on the glycaemic index than regular sugar.

With other coconut products also being popularised of late, such as coconut water, coconut milk and coconut oil, consumers will no doubt be pleased to see yet another.

Although coconut sugar cannot be classed as a superfood, it does however offer a more ecologically friendly alternative to regular cane sugar, which therefore appeals to the growing number of ‘green consumers’.

Coconut sugar is even being used as a natural sugar alternative in many food and drink products, including chocolate, confectionery and cereals.

With a more pronounced natural image than refined sugars, coconut sugar IS better for you than regular sugar.

At the end of the day, coconut sugar is not a miracle food, it still contains fructose (the unhealthy part of sugar). It does however contain 20% fructose on average than regular cane sugar.

Consumed in excess, it will cause obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, but as a healthier alternative to regular sugar, the coconut alternative is worth trying.

We have to stress that, although healthier than sugar, it is still not as good as not having any sugar at all.

But despite the issues, coconut sugar is a great way to make our favourite sweet treats that little bit less sinful.

Substituted for regular sugar, we can make all kinds of cakes, bakes and hopefully no mistakes in the kitchen to offer a much healthier alternative without sacrificing on flavour.

Whilst we don’t currently stock coconut sugar, we have a wide range of sugar and sweeteners, with accessories such as bowls, pourers and more to match!
