Do you know your food?

The scheme is back by a number of charities such as the Children’s Food Trust, Diabetes UK and others, and is also supported by a well-known British supermarket.

After hearing about that, it got us thinking – just how many of us have direct relations with where our food comes from, and how important is it?

As National Butchers Week draws to a close, we were reminded by a reason given to the recent resurgence of the butchers shop; the unparalleled knowledge of produce, ranging from an animal’s history through to best ways to cook and prepare certain cuts.

Moving away from meat spheres, it is becoming increasingly common for people to be enquiring about organic and free range items, not just if they are stocked, but the specifics about the goods be it eggs, kale or milk. Just look at coffee for example: at one end of the spectrum people clamour for information about where the beans were grown and how, and when, they were roasted. Product knowledge is slowly becoming king when it comes to food, and it’s quickly becoming a unique selling point for your menu.

So, how much do you know about the produce and ingredients you use?
